Today, like every school day, the bell rang at 1:56 pm at the end of fifth period. I gathered my belongings and Alfred, and headed towards the door. But as I was slamming the door open… I noticed this poster. I’ve seen this poster everyday for the past four years, but for some reason I had never actually read it. It said, “Life is not about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself”. Wow. Those words just hit me today. It’s not like we were placed on this Earth and everyone had a little biography that came with them that stated the exact person that you were going to become. There is no pre destiny. I don’t believe that we all have a specific purpose or that we all become someone one day. When would that day even happen? I know a guy in his forties that isn’t half the man he could be. You’re always yourself. You are always you. You don’t suddenly find yourself. The interesting thing about humans is the very fact that we can grow and change. I’ll always be Devan. But, I will be forever shaped by each little moment in every day. So how can I ever find myself if I am always changing? I really do believe that people create themselves. You create yourself by choosing how your set-backs, your successes, your moments of passion, etc… effect you as a person. Maybe I’m just babbling incoherent nonsense into the tubes of internets. But I guess that’s a very theatre poster to find in a drama class. I create people every time I land a role in a school play. I guess I never noticed that by doing that, I’m also creating myself.
